With more than four decades at Nippon Steel Corporation, Shioda-san is a renowned steel industry expert recognized across Japan and around the world. Over his 40.5-year career, he served as a trusted C-suite advisor on both commercial and technical matters and was a driving force behind NSC’s decarbonization initiatives from their inception – spanning DRI, hydrogen, biochar, and CCUS technologies.
As a key member of NSC’s strategic decision team, he played instrumental roles in landmark transactions and joint ventures including the $15 billion U.S. Steel acquisition, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (India), and Usiminas (Brazil). He also served as NSC’s principal liaison with leading global steel and mining companies such as POSCO, Tata Steel, JSW, SAIL, Rio Tinto, Vale, and Anglo American.
At Utility, he leads engagement with NSC and other Japanese steelmakers, advises on trading house and refining/chemical sector strategy, supports government and policy intelligence efforts in Japan, and contributes to global investor relations. His long-standing leadership in steel decarbonization earned him NSC Board endorsement as a champion of Utility’s H2Gen® technology.
He holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Geology and Mineralogy from the University of Tokyo and was a Visiting Researcher in Material Science at École Centrale de Paris.
